BYOD - Bring Your Own Device

What is BYOD?

BYOD is a strategy whereby students will be able to bring a familiar personal device to school to use as their primary technological device.

The school can provide the ability to connect compatible devices to a filtered internet service.

Due to the end of the ‘DER 1 to 1' laptop program, the Department of Education and Communities and Narooma High School are supporting the bringing of your own device for use at school.

Is it compulsory?

Narooma High School is supporting this initiative for 2019 and beyond, however at this stage it is entirely optional to bring your own device to school.

The school currently has adequate resources to support students without the need for personal devices to be brought from home.
The school is equipped with a number of computer rooms and sets of laptops in various Faculty areas which can be utilised by students.

This system has been working very effectively during 2019 and we expect it to continue through 2020.

What will the school provide?

The school will provide access to a filtered Wi-Fi internet service.
Staff will assist students to connect to the Wi-Fi.

Printing from personal devices will not necessarily be available from school.

No other support, software or service will be provided by the school.

Students are required to bring a USB thumbdrive\stick to school every day.
The thumbdrive should have a minimum of 8GB available storage.

How it works

At the heart of any BYOD experience is connectivity to the internet.
Every public high school in NSW has been equipped with a robust and centrally managed wireless network to allow staff and students to connect.

The DEC wireless network installed in high schools only operates on the 801.11n 5Ghz standard.
Devices with 801.11a/b/g 2.4 Ghz only will not be able to connect.

Bringing your existing device to school

Students are able to bring their existing personal devices to school and attempt connection to the wireless network. Staff, in the library, are able to assist with this.

If your device is unable to connect to the DEC wireless network, Wi-Fi adapters can be purchased which should rectify this issue.

There are numerous Wi-Fi adapters available on the market which may be suitable.
The following have been tested on the DEC Wi-Fi and are being successfully used in other schools.

D-Link DWA171
Cisco AE2500
ASUS USB-N53

Please note the school is not responsible for the installation of any software that may be required to manage these adapters.

Purchasing a new device

Where parents\students wish to purchase their own device to be utilised at school, the following minimum device specifications should be considered.

Please Note: The DEC wireless network installed in high schools only operates on the 802.11n 5GHz standard.  Devices with 802.11a/b/g or 802.11n 2.4GHz only will not be able to connect.

Ask this question before you buy a device for BYOD:

"The NSW Department of Education has a 5GHz (n) wireless network that uses a full range of channels. Will this device connect on all channels in the 5GHz range?"

Do not purchase a device for BYOD unless the answer is "yes"
