Special Education Needs

RTO 90333: Students with Special Education Needs

Students with Special Education Needs

Vocational Education and Training has an important role to play in the development of the social, interpersonal and employment skills that are a key component of the educational focus that will lead to successful community participation for students with special needs.

Students with special needs are encouraged to participate in VET courses on an equitable basis. The decision by a student with a special educational need to undertake a VET course should be carefully planned through the individual transition planning process involving the student, school, parents/caregivers and other relevant personnel. This ensures that the student chooses a course which meets their individual interests and needs.

Maximum benefit for students with special needs will only be achieved through careful matching of students to courses and the provision of appropriate levels of support. The course selected should provide realistic occupational outcomes and/or a vocational pathway to further training. Where students are supported under the integration Program, the Learning Support Team Coordinator at the school may find it useful to refer to the State Integration Program Guidelines for direction on determining the appropriate level of support.

Access Provision
An Access provision program recognises that students may require additional time to achieve competence in their course. Therefore students receive recognition for the 240 hours of study in the HSC generally in the form of 2 units Preliminary and 2 units HSC. The units of competence to be delivered in the 240 hours are negotiated through the individual transition planning process. The selection of units of competence for an Access Program course should lead towards the achievement of an AQF Certificate I or II and an occupational outcome. Students receive recognition for those units of competence successfully achieved at industry standard.

Further information can be found in the NESA publication Support Document for Students with Special Education Needs. This document can be found on the NESA website on Educationstandards.nsw.edu.au

Students with a disability can access any of the broad range of  VET courses delivered by schools and TAFE. Guidelines for support for students wishing to participate in a TVET course are linked to this page.
