PBL is an internationally acknowledged behaviour and learning framework which has been successfully implemented in thousands of schools throughout the world. Research shows that PBL schools increase student learning engagement and maximise positive student behaviours.
So how does PBL work?
- Rules and expectations for behaviour are very clearly set out for each area of the school and will be very visible, in the form of signage in the playground areas and within the classrooms.
- The school-wide rules and expectations will actually be taught in the classroom so that all students are aware of the rules across all areas of the school and that they understand what these rules actually mean.
Merit Recognition Scheme
Students will be recognised and rewarded in various ways for performance, achievement and contributions to school life that are noteworthy. The merit system is designed to promote, reward and recognise students' performance.
Students are awarded Fast Recognitions and Teacher Merits by staff for effort and achievement in the following areas:
Academic Achievement:-
- Consistent or improved behaviour,
- Consistent or improved attendance,
- Contribution to community or school life and/or leadership,
- Cultural and/or artistic performance,
- Sporting Achievement
Levels of Merit Fast Recognitions:
Awarded to students for quick recognition for any of the above areas. When a student has received ten (10) fast and furious awards they are eligible for a Merit Award.
Merits:
Teachers can award merits to students for a special achievement, e.g. excellent exam results or effort in assessment task in class.
Bronze:
When a student has achieved five (5) merits they are eligible for a Bronze Award Certificate which is given at Year Meetings.
Silver:
When a student has received three (3) Bronze Awards they are eligible for a Silver Award Certificate which is given at a Formal School Assembly.
Gold:
When a student has received two (2) Silver Awards they are eligible for a Gold Award Certificate which is given at a Formal School Assembly.
Medal:
When a student has received two (2) Gold Awards they are eligible for a School Medal. This is the highest level of award given at school and for this special recognition the student's application goes before a panel to decide whether the student qualifies for presentation. The student must: have received recognition in at least three (3) of the above areas for recognition and have no more than two (2) consequences registered against them in the term leading up to the Formal Assembly. If the student does not qualify for the medal this assembly period the nomination is moved to the next assembly period, this is repeated until student meets the criteria for receiving the School Medal. This is then presented at the following Formal School Assembly.
Parents/carers of students who have reached the gold medal level will be formally invited to the Formal Assembly and morning tea afterwards.
